How to Have Fun with Your Wardrobe in January

The first month of the year can sometimes feel a bit on the bleak side, especially if you’re living in a colder climate like Canada. In the height of winter, it’s normal to want to stay indoors, wear cozy clothes, consume comfort food, and binge the latest season of Squid Game. No spoilers!

While I am definitely feeling the need to retreat this month, I’ve been challenging myself to have fun with clothes when I am going out with friends or working at the office. Luckily, it’s almost become an added incentive to leave the warmth of the indoors,  looking for joy where I can find it during this chilly time of year. So with that in mind, today I’m sharing with you my tips on how to have fun with your wardrobe in January, in hopes of sparking joy that you can hold onto during these seemingly never-ending winter months.

Unique Pairings

Lately, I’ve been taking more risks with my outfits. Going bold with print or colour and in some cases even pairing them together. I’ve fallen in love with a bright cobalt blue paired with a leopard print. It fills me with happiness to wear this combo, what more could you ask for in the depths of winter?!

Eye Catching Details

You’ve heard it before, but It’s all in the accessories! From brooches to jewelry to shoes and back again. I encourage you to find accessories you love and that lend themselves to elevating the simplest of sweater moments. Look for accessories that stand out, because those will be the pieces that showcase your personality and ultimately will make your style sing.

Bright Knits

This one probably doesn’t come as a surprise in January. It’s dark and cold… wear colour to feel happy! Embrace colour in months where it feels easy to just say, “Screw it! All grey everything!” I promise it will not only lift your spirit but make you stand out in a crowd!

Statement Flats

Last, but certainly not least! I know what you’re thinking, flats in winter?! Are you crazy Stephanie? Obviously, I’m not going out in the snow in just flats, but in moments where I can do a shoe swap and put on “indoor” shoes I’ve been doing it. Yes, I want my feet to be warm in -16 weather, but when I get to the office, I want to feel stylish as hell no matter the temperature outside. Statement flats have been making me feel like a fashionable boss in these instances while also providing a great deal of comfort on long work days, not to mention, who wants to wear heels in the winter unless absolutely necessary? I recommend finding flats in colours that compliment your wardrobe to ensure high wearability, metallics for a hint of sparkle and even flats with eye-catching details. See what I did there? Combined two of my points, ha!

The point here is to have fun and take some risks with your style this January, because what better way is there to spark joy in the chilly winter months than having a great fashion moment!
