AHS Fall Reads

As the summer comes to a close, many are starting new and exciting endeavours, booking activities and getting ready to be in the throws of the fall season, but one thing that often gets missed in this sudden flurry of activity is sitting down with a good book. Though our university days are long gone we still feel the pull to learn and grow so this season we wanted to share some of our favourite recent reads and how they might add value to your day in this season of transition.

Great Fiction

Steph's Pick: Good Material by Dolly Alderton

I’m a sucker for all books by Dolly Alderton and this book is no exception. With humour and honesty, it depicts the struggles and heartache that come with a breakup in the modern world. Different from Alderton’s other books, we follow the break up of leading man Andy who is not quite failing but let’s say a flailing comedian. You’ll feel seen in this book whether you’ve been the dumper or the dumpee. It’s a guaranteed fun read, and Alderton brings everything together so beautifully by the conclusion of this rom-com-worthy novel.

Steph's Pick: Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano

This has been one of my recent favourite reads for its heartbreaking storytelling. This novel kept me on my toes from start to finish with enough family drama for a lifetime. Just when you think these characters have reached their limit of drama and gut-wrenching heartbreak, something else happens making you wonder if these characters will ever find peace. If you’re a drama junkie, I highly recommend picking up Hello Beautiful.

Self-Love

Nicole's Pick: Come Home to Yourself by Déjà Rea

This book is a beautiful read, outlining words of prose on topics that affect us all; Truth, Pain, and Abundance, and the ultimate pursuit of learning how to no longer fill your cup with only the love of others but the ability to love yourself unconditionally. It is a book that will break your heart open, look inside and give you the encouragement you need to look inward with kindness.

Steph's Pick: Atomic Habits by James Clear

I loved this book for its digestible habit-building methods. In the past, I’ve been all in with new habits, which isn’t always sustainable for longevity. But James Clear breaks down building habits in a way that feels easy and thoughtful as you build and grow towards your ultimate goals. This is the perfect read for anyone who loves a self-improvement moment!

Nicole's Pick: Gentle Reminder by Bianca Sparacino

Similar to ‘Come Home to Yourself’ this book leaves structure at the door with thought poems that capture the inner workings of the critical mind, challenging you as the reader to choose self-forgiveness and self-compassion over self-criticism and judgment. This is truly a gentle reminder of your precious self and how to move forward and let things go for the sake of future you.

Travel

Nicole's Pick: Coffee Shops by Tokyo Artrip

A unique book published with both English and Japanese translations takes you through different regions of Tokyo and all of the incredible coffeeshops and hidden gems throughout the city, highlighting both businesses that have been open for decades bringing generations of expertise, to new and exciting ventures that are challenging the status quo. This book leaves you as the reader with excitement to explore the incredible coffee culture of Tokyo!
