AHS Style Challenge: Home Decor Edition
It is no secret that here at Anne Hunter Studio we love a stylish moment, so to take our AHS Style Challenge this month to the next level we thought what better way than to bring Decor into the mix! With a budget of $50, Stephanie and I took to the vintage shops of Toronto to find two small decor pieces that would be versatile in our homes, styling them in the bathroom, bedroom and living room. After searching for the perfect item I found a set of stone pillar candles and Stephanie and a small mirror tray, check out where and how we styled our treasures in this AHS style challenge!
Living Room
Nicole: Styling pillar candles is always an interesting practice, especially ones with tea lights inside because they have the ability to either be a focal piece or stay in the background. I was drawn to these in particular when searching for a decor item for this challenge because, unlike most candle holders, these were made of a polished taupe stone with flecks of brown and black, giving them a unique finish that could be a contemporary addition to any room.
For the living room, I chose to put them front and centre and the focal point for our coffee table, paired with a small green tray to ensure they didn’t disappear against the white marble. I love this because it provides visual interest to the space with different levels but based on the colouration, it isn’t demanding or take up too much space.
Steph: Nicole will tell you that I don’t have a lot of sundries in my home and through my work with her I have begun to slowly opt for more of these kinds of pieces, offering both style and functionality in my home. With that in mind, when I saw this tray, it felt like a no-brainer. It was the perfect addition that would compliment my space effortlessly.
For the living room, I opted to keep the styling simple, placing the tray on a shelving unit where my books and TV live. I find that the combination of the gold handles, fresh peonies and small tea light candle, offer an elegant yet simplistic decor to an otherwise functional piece of furniture. Seeing fresh flowers in my home brings me so much joy in my day-to-day life and I love that I can elevate this further by using this beautiful vintage tray.
Bathroom
N: It is no secret that the bathroom doesn’t always have a lot of free counter space and ours is no different. To make sure I wasn’t taking away valuable real estate I opted to put them in a line at the back of the sink to add some ambiance to the room when lit. By adding a touch of decor to this room it goes from feeling utilitarian to a little softer and more comfortable, helping make the bathroom a space that provides rest instead of a stressful spot where you’re trying to get ready before running out the door.
S: In the bathroom, this tray elevates the everyday! I’ve opted to layer products I use on the regular to add a hint of flare to an otherwise simple space. The candle ties in the gold details to offer cohesion and ensures it feels aligned with other elements on the shelf. Taking my products off this tray to use every day, makes my skincare routine feel luxurious.
Bedroom
N: It’s always difficult to style objects like this in a bedroom when you don’t have a lot of surfaces and often need to reserve them for charging phones and glasses of water before bed, not to mention your latest read, but for this room, I opted to use the bedside table as the host for this decor, as it adds a little style to an arguably busy surface. To make sure the candles weren’t lonely I also added this lovely bouquet of flowers to make the room feel fresh and inviting.
S: In my bedroom, I chose to place my mirrored tray on my dresser. The gold handles complement the gold finshes of the dresser and picture frames around my room. In my bedroom, the tray is here solely as a decoration, to provide a polished look to the surface. Simply, a beautiful space to hold a picture, candle and ceramic box.
